Bridging the Mediterranean:
A Guide to Remittance Between the French Riviera and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The connection between the south of France and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a complex tapestry of migration, economic necessity, and high-stakes global trade. Remittance serves as a powerful engine for global economic stability and personal empowerment, acting as a direct financial lifeline that transcends borders.
Remittance fosters a profound sense of interconnectedness and shared prosperity, allowing displaced workers and diaspora communities to remain active participants in the growth and well-being of their home villages and families.
Navigating Remittances: From the Côte d’Azur to Kinshasa
Sending money from the south of France to the DRC has become increasingly streamlined, though it remains one of the more expensive remittance corridors globally. According to the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide database, the average cost of sending money to Sub-Saharan Africa remains around 6–8%, significantly higher than the Sustainable Development Goal target of 3%.

The Congolese Diaspora in the French Riviera
The French Riviera (primarily the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments) hosts a diverse African diaspora.
According to the latest INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) data from the 2021–2024 census cycles, immigrants from the DRC make up approximately 1.3% of the total immigrant population in France.
In the Alpes-Maritimes (including Nice, Cannes, and Antibes), approximately 15.1% of the population is foreign-born. Along the French Riviera, the DRC national community is a growing and culturally significant minority.
Based on INSEE’s regional breakdowns for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA), it is estimated that several thousand DRC nationals reside in the Riviera, with the highest concentrations found in Nice and the surrounding metropolitan areas.
